火星曾經對於人類而言，是可知不可及的地方，幾乎沒有人相信哪一天人類有機會移民到火星上生活，而隨著地球科技的不斷發展，這一切將成為現實。

經過衛星和無人機的不斷探索，已經證實火星上的確存在冰川和湖泊以及微生物生命跡象，有了水和大氣層就具備了人類生存的必要條件，能源和食物等並不是大問題。

火星是目前已知的在當今科技條件下能夠抵達的，最理想人類居住地。火星的陸地面積與地球差不多，隨著地球人口爆炸式增長，資源透支等問題，以及避免人類像白堊紀一樣再次遭遇滅絕危機，移民到外星球已經成為必然。

目前世界上航天科技較為發達的國家屈指可數，而能夠製造前往火星飛行器的國家那更是鳳毛麟角，目前具備這項能力的國家只有美俄中三國以及歐盟，大家都想成為第一個「哥倫布」，而除了上述四個具備航天實力的國家和地區外，阿聯，印度也想分一杯羹，他們雖然沒有強大的科技實力，但他們有錢呀，可以參與到火星項目中來。以阿聯為例，他們與美國科羅拉多大學博爾德分校、加州大學伯克利分校和亞利桑那州立大學合作出資「共同」研究火星探測技術。並計劃使用日本火劍於2020年7月發射火星探測器。
