根據國家標準，「紅木」的範圍確定為5屬8類33種，不過在這33種之外的都不屬於紅木了，5屬是以樹木學的屬來命名的，即紫檀屬、黃檀屬、崖豆屬及鐵力木屬。8類則是以木材的商品名來命名的，即紫檀木類、花梨木類、香枝木類、黑酸枝類、紅酸枝木類、烏木類、條紋烏木類和雞翅木類。而印度小葉紫檀就是這些木材中的王者之木，是紅木中的極品。
